These are the languages that are spoken here; I've no idea how well some of these translations are. Some of them may be funny.

26 Death from Ike in US

Let's put it in perspective. Yes, we suffered from Hurricane Ike; but some of us suffered more. Twenty six people died from Ike in the US. 6 of them in Galveston who were directly hit by Ike. That number will most likely go higher once Gavelston is fully accessed.

8 of them died of fumes from generators that were put inside their houses. How pity is that? A few died from falling from roof or trees and one died when a tree hit her house.

Then, the stock market was crushing for three days in a row after Ike. Lehman Brothers filed bankruptcy. Many people will lose their jobs. Is this the end of the world or what?

Then the stock market surged more than 400 today.

Cheers!

I checked my mail box for the first time after Ike today

I was too busy to check the mail box for 4 days. I got around to do that this morning.

Life becomes a reality again when I saw all those bills in the box. Don't you just wish they were blown away by Ike? The cell phone company should give us a break because the cell phone network barely worked during Ike. We'll for sure get a break from the power company because we didn't use their services for a few days. Smile

Then I found a traffic camera ticket. Some one else driving my car ran a yellow light and got caught by the traffic camera. Houston installed these cameras in many intersections. They made tons of money. The cameras are very good. It takes a snap shot of the license plate and reads it. It even has a video of you running through the light when the light is changing from yellow to red. No argument there.

I bet Houston must have stopped using the traffic cameras during Ike to give people a break. Or most of them didn't have power.

But I checked this ticket. It was dated before Ike. Geeze, I am out of luck.

My infamous broken window

I also got time this morning to check the window that was broken by a golf ball that I found the night before Ike.

I need to make one correction. Originally I said I put a "duct tape" on the window to cover the cracks. It was actually mask tape. Mask tape is much weaker than duct tape. And the glue as I found out is water soluble.

Look at this picture. The mask tapes I put outside of the glass window were all washed away.

This is from inside looking out. How can a Hurricane that blew up so many trees and roofs, but didn't blow open this broken window covered only by some duct tape?

Any one knows a good glass repair man around?

BTW, this window is like 200 yards away from the golf course. Some one had a very, very bad shot! And that person didn't bother to leave a name or a phone number. Mad

Some damages in downtown Houston

Zaki, a customer and formal co-worker, forwarded these pictures. They are Chase offices in downtown Houston.

The entire downtown was closed for a few days. It's going to take a while to rebuild so many damaged buildings.

Remember that black/white picture showing those traffic lights on Bellaire and Beltway 8 swinging in the air?

Well, I took this picture a day or two after that one. This time there is one hanging there. What happened to the other one? Did it simply fall off? I hope it didn't hit any one. Big Grin

On the bright side, this is another picture of the beautiful sunset from our office on Sept. 13 - the day after Hurricane Ike.

Someone from overseas suggested that we should leave Houston and move to somewhere else. There are just too many hurricanes here.

Can't you see the reason we are staying? Cool
